Welcome to the official Ledger getting started guide. If you’ve just purchased a Ledger Nano S Plus or Ledger Nano X, this page will help you begin the setup process step by step using the trusted resources available at Ledger.com/Start®.

Why Use a Ledger Hardware Wallet?

Ledger hardware wallets provide unmatched security for managing your cryptocurrency. Unlike hot wallets or custodial exchanges, a Ledger wallet keeps your private keys offline, protected from hackers, phishing attacks, and malware. Whether you’re holding Bitcoin, Ethereum, or thousands of other digital assets, Ledger supports a wide range of tokens with full control and security.

Step 1: Unbox and Inspect Your Device

Once your Ledger wallet arrives, inspect the packaging to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with. Inside the box, you should find:

If anything looks suspicious, do not use the device. Instead, contact Ledger support directly for verification.

Step 2: Visit Ledger.com/Start®

To ensure a safe and secure setup, go to the official onboarding page located at Ledger.com/Start®. This is where you will download the Ledger Live app and begin the configuration of your device. Never trust third-party websites or unofficial software sources — only use the official tools provided by Ledger.

Step 3: Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the companion application that connects to your Ledger hardware wallet. It allows you to set up your device, manage apps, add crypto accounts, and track your portfolio in real time. During installation, select your operating system and follow the prompts. After launching the app, choose “Get Started” and select your device model.

Step 4: Initialize the Device

You will be guided through the steps to set up your Ledger wallet:

Important: This recovery phrase is the only backup to restore your wallet. Write it down carefully and store it securely offline. Never take a digital photo or share it with anyone.

Step 5: Add Your Crypto Accounts

After the setup is complete, you can begin adding accounts for various cryptocurrencies. In Ledger Live:

  1. Go to the “Accounts” section
  2. Select the crypto asset you want to manage
  3. Install the relevant app onto your Ledger device
  4. Verify and approve the address on your device

This allows you to send, receive, and store crypto directly from your hardware wallet with full control.

Step 6: Keep Your Wallet Secure

Security is the foundation of Ledger’s ecosystem. Here are some essential tips to protect your funds:

Remember: Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase — anyone who does is attempting to scam you.

Step 7: Backup and Emergency Recovery

Use the recovery sheet provided to write down your 24-word phrase. Store it in a secure, offline location such as a safe or lockbox. For additional durability, consider using a metal backup solution to protect against fire and water damage. If your device is ever lost or damaged, you can restore access using the recovery phrase on a new Ledger device.
